With the participation of Alberto Estébanez, director of the Festival, and Arantxa Vela, director of the film. Meeting moderated by journalist Marta Carrasco.
MARÍA PAGÉS, EL BAILE DE LA ALQUIMISTA
How does María Pagés think? How does she invent her movements? What inspires her dance? From the staging of her show 'De Scheherezade' at the Teatro Romano de Mérida, we delve into her creative process, a process she has shared for more than ten years with the poet and playwright El Arbi El Harti. Both help us to deconstruct scenes and to draw a line that links with his previous shows. Through a fine sense of humor, the couple reveals the happiness and difficulties of living and working together. María Pagés is shown as a woman whose existence is centered on stage, in her way of understanding flamenco. Her dancing seems something close to meditation and her creative process, a kind of trance.
In 2021, the Academia de las Artes Escénicas de España decided to produce a series of documentaries with the aim of making known the creative processes of the different artists whose disciplines make up the performing arts.
El baile de la alquimista' is the third documentary produced by the Academy and the second directed by Arantxa Vela Buendía. On this occasion, it has been dedicated to the creative process of the dancer and choreographer María Pagés.
The filming began in the Roman theater of Mérida in 2022 where María Pagés presented her show 'De Scheherezade'. We witnessed how the choreography was adapted to this unique and majestic space. After the performance at the International Classical Theater Festival, we traveled to Madrid. We went to the María Pagés Choreographic Center to learn about her activity and there we discovered how this exceptional woman dedicates part of her time to putting on shows with children, the elderly and people with disabilities. It was surprising to see that she did it with the same passion and joy that she used to do any of her choreographies. Turning her artistic experience into social action is one of the principles she defends in her work.

ANTONIO CANALES (SPAIN)
It is one of the most prestigious and recognized representatives of our culture internationally. Son and grandson of artists, he became interested in dance at a very young age. His first professional opportunity was given by the National Ballet of Spain (BNE), where he was a soloist dancer and principal dancer, and for which he choreographed two works: "Grito" (1998), premiered at the City Center in New York, and "A ciegas" (1999), a production with which Canales debuted at the Teatro de la Zarzuela as a guest of the BNE.
Before leading his own company, which debuted in Bilbao in 1992 with the productions "A ti, Carmen Amaya" and "Siempre Flamenco," Antonio Canales developed a solo career as a flamenco performer, sought after in important International Galas where he shared the stage with greats such as Rudolf Nureyev, Maya Plisetskaya, or Carla Fracci, among others.
At the helm of his company, Canales has created works and successes such as "Torero" (1993), "Gitano" (1997), "La Cenicienta" (2000), "Ojos Verdes" (2003), and "Carmen, Carmela." The Sevillian choreographer and dancer has also starred in the feature film "Vengo" and is the author of the novel "Sangre de albero."
He was awarded the National Dance Prize in 1995; Distinguished Member of UNESCO's CID since 2013; Andalusian Medal in 1999; in 2017, he received the Silver Slipper from the Indanza Association; City of Seville Medal in 2022; and in 2020, he was recognized with the Gold Medal for Fine Arts Merit by the Government of Spain, among other awards and important distinctions he has received throughout his extensive career as an essential figure in dance.
